National Merit Semifinalist

Bishop Kenny High School is proud to announce that Davis Johnson, Melanie Staples, and Bridget Sutter, Class of 2023, have been named as National Merit Semifinalist in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. It's a significant achievement that reflects their dedication to academic excellence. We wish them the best of luck in becoming finalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program when they are confirmed in March 2023.

It's evident that these students have not only excelled academically but have also been actively involved in leadership roles in extracurricular activities and honor societies. Their commitment to both their studies and their broader school community is commendable. Johnson, Staples, and Sutter all maintain rigorous academic schedules and are involved in leadership roles in a multitude of extracurricular activities and honor societies.

Johnson shared, “My Bishop Kenny experience has been a truly amazing one, as I have had the opportunity to form lifelong friendships, challenging my self both academically and physically while strengthening my faith.”  She has accumulated over 400 service hours and is a member of the cross country and track team.  Johnson will pursue her passion for cross country and track running at the collegiate level but hasn’t committed at this time.  She plans to pursue a major in pre-med with a focus on biology with a minor in business.

Sutter also had strong feelings about her high school experience, “BK has allowed me to grow academically, athletically, and socially, but most importantly, given me a stronger foundation to grow and learn about my faith.” She would like to attend the University of Notre Dame and major in economics with a minor in sports management.

Staples mentioned having similar sentiments stating, “I am so thankful for my time at Bishop Kenny!  I had the chance to receive a well-rounded education and grow in my faith while also exploring the many other interests in my life.”  She would like to attend Nova Southeastern University and pursue a major in marine biology and possibly double major in music.  Staples was a member of the Tri-M Music honor society and would like to continue her passion for the arts.

Congratulations also are extended to seniors Theodore Gurt, Isabella Hutchins, Sean Madigan, Kaylee Mahony, Jalila Nackashi, Matthew Phan, Julian Pinkston, Mary Clare Stinneford, Conner Subjinski, and Amanda Waldrep who were also recognized as Commended Students in the National Merit program based upon their outstanding PSAT scores.
