Thinking while Reading
The P-L-A-S-T-I-C Method of Active Reading
Readers who want to comprehend a text engage the text by actively thinking while they are reading. Here is a specific method that you can use while you read to help you comprehend.
Predict the Point – continually predict where the author is going and adjust your expectations with new information
Look up Words – take time to look up the meaning of new words in order to help you understand the text
Ask Questions – ask questions along the way when the meaning gets confusing or when problems arise
Summarize – mentally condense the information into a summary statement after you finish reading
Text-to-self, text-to-text, text-to-world – make connections, thinking "where have I seen this before?"
Images – create images in your head of what the author’s words are saying
Clarify – after you finish reading, take time to go back and make meaning of something that was misunderstood at first
