JIM TOWEY BOOK SIGNING • 05/10/23
Thank you to our alumni that came out to support Jim Towey '74! A trusted advisor and devoted friend of Mother Teresa, he gave an extraordinary firsthand account of the woman who became a saint. A former senior White House advisor, head of Florida's social services agency, and founder of the nonprofit Aging with Dignity, Jim's book shines light on the practical lesson from Mother Teresa and how following her example in small ways makes our life better and more beautiful in all seasons of life, but especially our later years. It was a wonderful evening!
NJROTC 50TH ANNIVERSARY • 3/28/23
Bishop Kenny celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Jacksonville City leaders, the Diocese of St Augustine Superintendent of Schools, current and former cadets and instructors, and parents and family members were in attendance for the event.
BK NJROTC was established on April 2, 1973, as the second NJROTC unit in Jacksonville. The program’s mission is to instill in high school students the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment. With a current enrollment of 123 students, NJROTC introduces young cadets to Navy values and traditions and teaches the historical, political, and economic impact of the Navy through courses that emphasize armed basic and exhibition drill, color guard, naval operations, naval weapons, and aircraft, as well as practical leadership skills. BK NJROTC prepares graduates to attend service academies and civilian institutions, and helps students earn ROTC scholarships.
The unit has a strong tradition of excellence, and Commander Brian Morrill estimates it has helped students earn at least 30 service academy appointments, about 60 ROTC scholarships, and an overall 93% civilian college acceptance rate during those 50 years, all while serving the Jacksonville community through an estimated 90,000+ community service hours.
The celebration included a tour of the program’s new training facility. Congratulation, BK NJROTC, and thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate the momentous occasion.
BIG RED BALL • 2/4/23
It was a wonderful evening at the Big Red Ball! We are thankful to our event sponsors and the more than 430 guests that attended and supported the school. Your efforts reaffirm our commitment to the mission of Catholic education and the tradition of excellence at Bishop Kenny. It was also an evening of great fun and we enjoyed seeing everyone come together over cocktails, dinner, and dancing. It was a Kenny gathering full of “remember when's” and new connections, we have loved hearing from the many of you that reached out to say what a good time you had.
We want to extend a special thank you to Brian Sexton P ’19, P ’23, P ’24 for managing the live action, which alone raised $17,000 and brings our event total to $120,000 raised. These funds will continue our campus renovation projects that implement additional state-of-the-art technology in classrooms. To learn more about this technology, view the video below.
Thank you again for your support and for making a difference in the lives of our students.
