Congratulations to Bishop Kenny High School sophomore David Hoyt for being selected as the Channel 12 Student of the Week. Katie Jefferies, Channel 12 news reporter, visited BK to film David in class and interview him for a news segment to be aired on March 8. David was honored to be selected and said, “I love the freedom at Bishop Kenny and have wonderful classes and teachers who are helping me achieve my long term goals.”
David is a dedicated student who is actively involved in after-school activities both at Bishop Kenny and in the Jacksonville community. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America on March 11 and spent two years planning, organizing, his pinnacle project of building a large sun dial at Christ the King Catholic School. He worked closely with L’Arche Harbor House of Jacksonville which is a faith filled residential community for adults with developmental disabilities. They created the tiles used for the time of day and the months of the year on the sun dial in their Rainbow Workshop. David dedicated the sun dial to his mother, Erica Hoyt, who passed away when he was in the first grade.
David truly believes in service and has accumulated over 257 community service hours before completing his second year of high School. He is a certified open under water diver, a member of the BK swim team, and a member of the Arlingwood Swim Club. His long-range plans include attending college to earn a degree in Marine Biology. David said, “I love anything to do with the water and want to spend my life working above, on, or below water doing whatever I can to make our planet healthier.” We celebrate this ambitious young man whose future looks very bright.
