Eight varsity wrestlers competed in the class 1A state tournament at the Silver Spur Arena in Kissimmee, over the weekend of March 2& 3. The team finished in 8th place, the highest team-finish in Crusader Wrestling history.
Congratulations to Senior Josiah McCallum who provided the highlight of the weekend by winning the state championship in the 285 pound category. McCallum finished a fantastic season ranked as the number one heavyweight in the state of Florida with an undefeated record of 48-0. The future Appalachian State wrestler pinned his way through the tournament and never gave up a takedown the entire season, an incredible accomplishment that very few athletes are able to achieve. McCallum also finishes his career as the only wrestler to be named All-State in consecutive seasons, and only the second state champion in Bishop Kenny history.
Underclassmen Joey Cusick and Andrew Slade also reached the podium. Slade, a junior, finished in 6th place at the 145 pound weight class and Joey Cusick, also a junior, finished in 5th place at 152 pounds. This marks the first time in school history that multiple teammates placed in the top six in the same season.
Congratulations to Josiah, Andrew, Joey, Head Coach Paul Schloth, assistant coach Brian Reese, and the rest of the state qualifiers including Jack Delaney, Jack Donghit, Garrett Tirado, Nick Beenen and John Alexander on a fantastic individual and team season!
